2007 Queensland Junior Road Championships
The Rockhampton Cycling Club hosted a very successful Queensland Junior Road Championships event on 23 / 24 June. Young riders braved some dismal conditions for Saturday's Time Trial and Road Race at the Capricorn Coast, but the bright winter sunshine returned for Sunday's Criterium at Rosella Park, Gracemere. The Rockhampton Club is grateful to Cycling Queensland for the opportunity to host this year's event.
Our own top peformers were Kelly Smith with two gold medals in the Under 15 Women's Road Race and Criterium, both races ending in a bunch sprint of seven riders. Harry Rassie took the silver medal in the Under 19 Men's Time Trial. Unfortunately Harry suffered mechanical problems in the Road Race and was forced to withdraw. Josh Edwards won the bronze in the Under 19 Men's Criterium.
While all the Rockhampton riders put in a terrific effort in their respective divisions, some worthy of note were Duran Stander who finished fifth in the Under 17 Men's Road Race, and Josh James who rode extremely well in the Under 19 Men's Criterium. In the second last lap, Josh sacrificed his own chances with a huge turn on the front to get Josh Edwards back in contact with a small breakaway group before the bell lap. Josh James also finished fourth in the Under 19 Men's Time Trial. In other results, Alex O'Dea was fourth in the Under 15 Women's Criterium, Josh Edwards finised fifth in the Under 19 Men's Road Race and Brian McLeod was seventh in the Under 19 Men's Time Trial. Congratulations must go to Event Director Stefan Smith (and Roxanne, behind the scenes) for the meticulous preparation of every aspect of both day's racing. The weekend ran smoothly and safely and the facilities available to our club for the event really set a benchmark for such events.
It would also be appropriate to recognise the Livingstone Shire Council and their squad of Traffic Controllers who did a first class job ensuring the safety of riders, and who braved the elements for the entire day. A big thankyou to the Principal and school community of Farnborough School for the great facilities at our disposal on Saturday. Also thanks to RoadTek for the provision of the variable message boards advising motorists of cyclists on the road. Rydges Resort allowed us to use their facilities and were very accomodating and helpful in relation to our requirements. Thanks also to the developers of Rosella Park for supporting our request to use the estate for the Criterium and to the Rockhampton Traffic Branch for their assistance with the Police Permits. St John's Ambulance personnel provided a first class service across the entire weekend and fortunately were only called upon a couple of times to render First Aid.
Last but not least, thankyou to the large number of our own club members who helped out over the weekend. Every one of those tasks from commissairing to driving vehicles, putting out signs, manning corners, running the canteen, judging etc. was crucial to the safe and efficient running of the weekend's racing.
2007 National Road Championships
Rockhampton cyclists have excelled at both the Australian and New Zealand Road Cycling Championships. Glen Chadwick produced a superb ride to win the New Zealand Time Trial Championship and also placed fifth in the Road Race. Lorian Graham finished in a remarkable 13th place in the Elite Women's Road Race after a long rehabilitation from the serious injuries suffered in Germany.
Anna Meares Breaks Own World Record
Our own Olympic cycling champion Anna Meares broke her world record for the 500-meter time trial Saturday, taking 0.008 of a second off the mark she set to win gold at the Athens velodrome in 2004. Anna set the new mark of 33.944 seconds to win the World Cup track cycling event at the Dunc Gray Velodrome in Sydney. Anna Meares also teamed with her sister Kerri to win the team sprint event over the German pair of Jane Gerisch and Dana Gloss.

2006 - 2007 Track Season
The 2006 - 2007 Teack Season will commence on Saturday 14 October with a "Come & Try" afternoon followed by racing that night. Racing will then continue each Friday night, except for once-a month racing on the first Saturday night of each month. There will be no club racing on weekends of major carnivals in other centres e.g. Townsville, Maryborough. A Track Calendar has been completed and will be available soon on the website.
Road Season Thank You
On completion of the 2006 Road Season, there are many people to thank for their consistent effort in enabling weekly racing to take place. In particular, Ian Jennings, our Chief Commisaire, who has worked tirelessly to ensure our Commisaire roster was filled as well as being in charge of our Rockhampton Road Open and completing Commissaire duties at weekly racing. Ian has also added his vast experience to the day to day operation of the club. Also thanks to all the Club Commissaires on the roster for their professionalism in overseeing racing. Penny Olman has again taken the nominations each week, prepared the prizemoney, looked after the judging and passed on to me (the handicapper) the results to be prepared for the records and website. This is a difficult job and Penny has done it to her usual high standard. Other key club members include Stefan and Roxanne Smith, who did the lion's share of putting out signage as well as driving vehicles, officiating and Commissairing. John Phelan, club President, has led us very efficiently through the season. Owen Ronalds assisted with coordinating volunteers needed for weekly racing. If you helped out by manning a corner, driving a vehicle, putting out signs, taking nominations or doing any of the many other jobs that allow successful road racing, thank you. We will be putting a great deal of thought into the 2007 Road Season schedule in terms of courses which are safe and easy to manage, and also examining how many road races we can conduct given the increasing duty of care obligations we are obliged to meet.
2006 was a successful Road Season. We hope you have enjoyed the racing provided and look forward to your return next year.
Sarah Edwards -National Road Race Silver Medallist
Sarah Edwards has captured the Silver Medal at this year's National Under 17 Women's Road Race at the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations Sarah!

Recent Activities
•We have been awarded a Sport and Recreation Queensland grant to conduct a Come & Try day and followup sessions. We plan to do this in October on dates to be confirmed. Many thanks to Alex Bright for the many hours that she put into this application.
•Alex has also submitted an application for funding for a camera and laptop for photo finishes.
•On 30 June we filed an application for funding from the AIS for Talent Search Funding. If successful we will be running a program similar to the 2003 Talent Identification program. The differences will be that we will be running this program, not the QAS and that this program will be open to existing members as well as new members between the ages of 13 to 23. This will be a significant achievement for our Club if we are awarded this funding as it normally goes to State organisations. Our strong management structure and our record on the road and track will be in our favour. Many thanks again to Alex who put the submission together and received letters of support from all areas of the sport including the Australian Cycling Head Coach, Martin Barras.
•Many of you would already know that Alex has accepted a position as Development Officer with Cycling Queensland and will move to Brisbane at the end of July. We will miss her greatly, not only for all of the work that she does but also because she always has a smile and a laugh (except when she's climbing a hill!!)
•Anouska Edwards recently won the State Criterium Champuionship for women and Kate Porteous came third. Well done girls for keeping our club name on the winners' list. Grant Irwin, still a member of our club although he lives in Brisbane, was placed second in the men's event. Well done Grunter.
•Last weekend we ran the first Calliope to Biloela road race. It went very well with no safety issues and was well received by all of the riders. We plan to make this a feature of the road calendar.
•Bike Chicks has started with a good group of existing and new female members now participating in structured, supervised training. Congratulations to Anouska and Alex for getting this initiative going. Gavin Hopes and some other helpers are going to fill the gap that Alex leaves. Gavin knows a lot about cycling and is developing into a very good coach, but as far as being a "Bike Chick" goes......
•The Club Planning Sessions were held recently by a small group of committed club members. The plan from this will be available shortly.
Coming Events
•The Rocky Open will be on 15 and 16 July. Online entries are now closed.
•The Club has applied to Cycling Queensland to conduct the 2007 State Titles. At this stage CQ has received our application but deferred their decision.
•We will be applying for a date to conduct the Rocky Cup on Wheels 2007 in the near future. This is normally in late January.
•We have attended a meeting about holding a major criterium event in Rocky in November this year. United Sports Marketing would promote the event and it would be a qualifier for the Brisbane and Surfers Paradise crits for Elite riders. There would be support events for the other grades as well as a "mass participation" event. This is not settled yet but in the "ideas" stage.
•We will be starting work on our shaded warm-up area in the near future. Helpers need to manage the project.
As you can see there is a lot happening as well as running racing each weekend.

The Championships; commencing on Monday 2nd January with the womens 500m Time trial and mens 4000m Teams Pursuit and standing 1 lap time trial will run through every night until Saturday 8th January. The championships will showcase Queensland’s finest track cyclists – all of whom will be vying for State Selection to contest the Australian Track Cycling Championships in Adelaide in February.

McPherson will be the one to beat in the sprint series, the standing 1 lap time trial and the keirin.

Edwards will have strong competition from Brisbane’s Liz Young.
In the men, the Championships will see the return of 2003 World Junior 1000m Time Trial Champion Wade Cosgrove, who has returned to the velodrome after time out of competitive cycling. Cosgrove will contest the sprints, standing lap and keirin.
Joining Cosgrove in the elite mens field will be Grant Irwin, Miles Olman, Lindsay McMaster and Jay Callaghan. In the sprints, Broncos Ben Simonelli will be one to watch while Olman will be the favourite in the elite mens 400m Individual Pursuit and Irwin a serious medal contender in the elite mens 1000m time trial.
The U19 men will also be a hotly contested field at this year’s Championships, with plenty of up and coming talent filling this field. Rockhampton will be represented by Joshua Edwards (endurance), Lachlan Plane (sprints), Jeremy Hogg (sprints) and Tyler Wright (sprints).
Edwards will be focusing on the endurance events for the State Championships; namely the 3000m Individual Pursuit, Scratch Race and Points Score. CQU Rockhampton Cup on Wheels for 2006
Central Queensland University has confirmed it will continue as the major sponsor of the Rockhampton Cup on Wheels, the two day cycling spectacular run by the Rockhampton Cycling Club to be held at the Kenrick Tucker Velodrome, Rockhampton on 20th and 21st January 2006.
CQU joined forces with the Rockhampton Cycling Club in 2005 and this partnership for 2006 and beyond is a natural extension of relationships that has been building with the cycling community over several years.
The School has developed research linkages and industry collaborative scholarships with Queensland Cycling and the Queensland Academy of Sport. CQU and the Rockhampton Cycling Club have worked collaboratively in talent identification of junior emerging cyclists, which resulted in Phillipa Hindmarsh, a product of this program winning a National Junior U17 Sprint Title at the 2005 National Junior Track Cycling Championships in Melbourne earlier this year
Cycling-related research continues to be carried out in the community, with the most recent achievement involving the School of Health and Human Performance (HHP) Technical Officer, Greg Capern. Greg attended the HESTA (Health and Exercise Science Technologists Association) conference in Brisbane in November where he won the peer-reviewed best paper award for his work on "PACER - a remote heart rate monitor". This heart rate monitor is being utilised by nationally-recognised cycling coach, Ken Tucker of the Rockhampton Cycling Club as part of the training regime of his elite squad.
CQU student involvement also plays an important role in this relationship, with students taking practicum placements in event management during the lead up and during the event.
The 2005 Rockhampton Cup on Wheels attracted over 160 riders from across Australia from juniors through to Masters athletes.
